Central Catholic quarterback Dylan Swartz was 16 of 24, for 285 yards and three TDs, as the Raiders pulled away in the second half for a 52-24 win over Argonaut to open the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4B playoffs Friday night.
The No. 2-seeded Raiders (10-1) host No. 3 Summerville (10-1) in next week's quarterfinal, a rematch of last year's playoff opener which Central won.
Swartz had two 28-yard TD tosses to Billy Flamion (4 catches, 92 yards) and a 14-yarder to Jack Killian (8 catches, 145 yards) -- though he also threw his first interception of the season.
Flamion also returned a kickoff 73 yards for a TD in the third quarter, making it 45-17. Sophomore Craig Jones (seven carries, 104 yards, TDs) handled the running game.
Argonaut scored first on Danny Welch's 30-yard run, one of the few times this season that Central had trailed.
"It was tough at first because Argonaut scored first," assistant Tony Ribero said. "Central answered, and Argonaut was on their way to scoring their second touchdown of the first quarter and fumbled in the end zone."
SUMMERVILLE 33, RIPON 0, at Tuolumne City -- If there was any question whether the rain and cold would derail the Bears' high-octane offense, it were answered by their lopsided win over the Indians (7-4). Summerville (10-1) goes to No. 2 seed Central Catholic (10-1) in next week's semifinal, a rematch of last year's playoff opener won by Central.
Zach Roberson tossed a 22-yard TD pass to Dustin Perkins and Taylor Gold scored on a 5-yard run in the first half, but the Bears missed both PATs and settled for a 12-0 lead. They put the game away quickly in the third quarter, with Roberson running 15 yards for a score and then Gold breaking loose on a 22-yard TD run -- and Dylan Day's run on the two-point conversion made it 26-0.
CALAVERAS 18, DIXON 14, at Dixon -- The No. 7 Redskins (7-4) scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and shut out the No. 2 Rams (9-2) in the second half to pull off an upset in the D4-A opener. Jake Fischer had 151 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries, and Calaveras held Dixon to 197 total yards.
Fischer put the Redskins on the scoreboard first with an 8-yard run, but the Rams scored 14 unanswered points on a 10-yard run by Sam Welch and a 40-yard pass from Jeffrey Anderson to Nick Salazar. But the second half belonged to Calaveras. Quarterback Garrett Bock ran in from 1 yard and Matt Pekarcik kicked a 22-yard field goal to close the scoring. The Redskins will play at No. 2 Placer on Friday.
