LARGE SCHOOLS

1. (1) Sierra (9-1): QB Jonathan Davis gives Sierra a downfield passing game, which will keep defenses from overplaying RB Jarrod Daniels in the playoffs.

2. (2) Oakdale (9-1): Shook off upset loss to Sierra by pounding rival Sonora 35-7 to share the VOL title with Sierra. Friday's game likely their last at home.

3. (3) Los Banos (7-3): Defense sputtered, but the offense picked up the slack in 48-47 win over Los Banos, clinching last CCC title for Tigers, who move into the WAC next season.

4. (4) Manteca (7-3): Buffs have been on a roll the last five weeks, with only a narrow loss to Oakdale. They're averaging 41.5 points a game over the span.

5. (5) Sonora (8-2): It's all about the draw for 'Cats, who are at their best when playing a power run team that attacks the middle. Got nice opener vs. Whitney.

6. (6) Modesto (7-3): Panthers carry a six-game win streak into Los Banos Friday. Which league is better, the CCC or MMC? We're going to find out this week.

7. (7) Buhach Colony (7-3): Thunder within one play of beating Los Banos and creating five-way tie for CCC crown.

SMALL SCHOOLS

1. (1) Central Catholic (9-1): Minimal turnovers will serve Raiders in what should be most difficult section tournament in years. Four Ws could equal bowl spot.

2. (2) Modesto Christian (10-0): Virtual bye last week of the season gives Crusaders time to heal and prepare for playoffs. Biggest threat to MC is going to be their own injuries.

3. (3) Escalon (9-1): Offense scored just 21 after managing just 16 in a Week 9 loss to MC. Are people figuring out the wing-T? And will we see any twists?

4. (5) Summerville (9-1): QB Zach Roberson has 30 TD passes and has the Bears rolling. At least 30 points in last five games, and home playoff opener.

5. (6) Ripon (7-3): It's rematch time, as the Indians beat Summerville 32-23 in Week 2. A combination of a tough defense, ball-control offense creates a threat.

6. (7) Calaveras (6-4): Tough opener with medium-school power Dixon. Passing game must play a role, as Dixon defense knows all about RB Monti Wilson.

7. (4) Hilmar (8-2): Loss of QB in Week 9 sent the offense reeling during a 26-6 loss to rival Patterson.
