Monday afternoon update: Both occupants of the sports utility vehicle that was broadsided Sunday morning in Modesto are expected, at this point, to survive, according to Sgt. Brian Findlen of the Modesto Police Department. Both are in critical but stable condition, he said. Police have no new information about the crash, and are asking any witnesses to please come forward and call the Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit at 572-9592.
A sport utility vehicle broadsided a pickup early Sunday, severely injuring the two people in the truck, Modesto police said.
Police arrested the SUV driver — 31-year-old Modesto resident Jessie Murphy — on suspicion of felony DUI, according to a news release.
The 53-year-old man and the 39-year-old woman in the Dodge pickup suffered major, possibly life-threatening injuries, according to the release. The man was taken to a Mo- desto hospital. The woman was airlifted to a Sacramento hospital.
Police did not release their names, and information on their condition was unavailable Sunday evening.
The accident happened about 4 a.m. at Briggsmore Avenue and Coffee Road by Memorial Medical Center.
Police said Murphy was driving a Suburban west on Briggsmore at a high rate of speed as she approached the intersection.
Murphy had three passengers in the Suburban and one of them was admitted to Memorial Medical Center, police said.
Police also are following up on information that the Suburban was involved in another collision in the area of Parker Road and Held Avenue and was possibly being chased by another vehicle.
Murphy was being held on $25,000 bail at the jail Sunday evening, according to the jail's Web site.
Anyone who witnessed any of the events involved in the accident are asked to call the Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit at 572-9592.
