Jason Lee couldn't lead his team to victory in his final game, but the Downey High quarterback took home a nice consolation prize: He set a Sac-Joaquin Section single-season record with 3,900 passing yards.
Lee needed 451 yards to break the record set just last year by St. Mary's Cody Vaz, who threw for 3,874 yards in 15 games. Lee threw for 476 yards, completing 42 of 57.
It wasn't enough to beat Johansen, as it rallied for 14 fourth-quarter points for a 41-35 Modesto Metro Conference victory.
Lee has been among the nation's most prolific passers since going for 488 yards the third week. The state record for passing yards in the regular season is 3,963, so Lee finished 63 yards short of that record.
As usual, Javon Kelly (14 catches, 171 yards, TD) and Corey Keller (16 catches, 197 yards, TD) did much of the damage.
Kelly set section and state records with 103 catches this season: The overall section record was 97, while the state regular-season record was 99. He also finished with a section-record 1,569 yards, surpassing the previous high of 1,526 yards.
All that offense gave Downey a 35-27 lead after three quarters, but Johansen tied it at 35 on Armando Hernandez's 1-yard and Preston Lee's two-point conversion run.
Jonathan Uperesa put Johansen ahead with a 14-yard TD run with 2:10 to play. The two-point attempt failed, however.
Lee drove Downey to the Johansen 28 -- he began the drive with 419 yards, leaving him 32 yards short of the record -- but was sacked on fourth down to end the game.
