Hundreds line Modesto streets to honor veterans

UPDATE - A crowd estimated at between 1,000 and 1,500 people lined the streets of downtown Modesto today for the annual Veterans Day parade. Bands, military vehicles and veterans from World War II to Iraq marched or rode by.

The biggest contingent of veterans was from the Vietnam War.

The parade ended at Graceada Park, where there were speeches and other festivities to honor those who have served their country in the military.

Students at California State University, Stanislaus, kicked off Veterans Day celebrations a day early with a "Support Our Troops" event on campus Tuesday. The recognitions continue today with parades and ceremonies throughout the Northern San Joaquin Valley.

Modesto

Veterans will parade through downtown beginning at 9:15 a.m. and gather for a ceremony at Mancini Bowl in Graceada Park. In the evening, the city is holding a Veterans Day dinner at 6 in the American Legion Hall, 1101 S. Santa Cruz Ave. The cost is $10. For more information, call Al Menshew at 664-1599.

Merced

Soldiers, Marines and sailors will be honored at the city's fifth Veterans Day Parade beginning at the Courthouse Park Veterans Memorial. Speakers and music will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the parade after the park event.

Livingston

A Veterans Day parade will be on Main Street at 11 a.m. It's sponsored by Livingston-Delhi Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8327.

Patterson

The Patterson Garden Club is dedicating a Blue Star Memorial to honor World War II veterans today at 9 a.m. in the Hammon Senior Center, 1033 Las Palmas Ave.
