The Internal Revenue Service said that 582 refund checks mailed to taxpayers from the counties in The Bee's readership area were returned to the IRS by the Post Office as undeliverable last year. These checks were returned from Stanislaus, Calaveras, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin and Tuolumne Counties.
Undeliverable checks returned from these counties averaged $882, the IRS said. The first-time homebuyer's credit and recovery rebate credit and other tax breaks probably attributed to the increase in refunds.
