Is your personality wrecking interviews? S. Renee (www.srenee.com) motivates people to break the pattern. Look what she says to do:

• “Is anyone home? Wake up!”

An applicant walked in with a perfect resume, putting him on target for the position. However, he spoke dryly and slowly, commenting, “I know it doesn’t seem like it, but I really can do the job.” Do you think he got the offer? A touch of authentic enthusiasm goes a long way, Renee maintains.

• “Make sure that the wrong person doesn’t show up!”

A woman arranged an interview for a friend who needed help. The company paid for air travel to the interview, only to hear one-word answers to questions. When the applicant called her friend for feedback, the woman said, “The wrong person showed up!” Be the right person, Renee advises. Leave your problems outside the company’s front door.

• “Keep your lips puckered! There are plenty of babies to kiss.”

Politicians win converts, Renee points out. They walk with pep, smile and dig out the needs of their constituents. They also win hearts by kissing babies. In interviews, follow their leads. Find out what a company needs to keep happy. Baby-kissing may be optional.
