There will be no third consecutive Golden Gate Conference Championship for the Modesto Junior College football team.

The Pirates lost to host Laney 29-19 on Friday night, falling to 2-2 in the GGC. Laney and Chabot will play for the conference title next week while Modesto hosts Merced.

Modesto head coach Sam Young said penalties and stalled drives hurt the Pirates the most.

Modesto jumped out to a 19-0 lead before the Eagles rallied for three scores in the second quarter to lead 22-19 at halftime. The Pirates' last drive ended on downs on the Laney 4-yard line with 13 seconds to go.

"We were our own worst enemy," Young said. "We had untimely penalties. We just couldn't get it going in the second half."
