I am responding "2 maulings revive pit bull concerns" (Oct. 29, Page B-2). As the mother of a 10-month old baby and the owner of a pit bull who lives in our home, I do not agree with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wanting to ban pit bulls. However, I do believe that the punishment for treating an animal inhumanly should be dramatically increased.
Banning this animal will allow for only criminals to own this breed because they are used to getting what they want by breaking the law. As far as the child in Delhi being killed by a pit bull, if you tied me to a tree, I would probably bite you, too. People should be smart when allowing dogs to interact with children. You should always supervise contact between a dog and a child regardless of the breed, because one dead baby is one too many!
