The city-owned house that was the site of a $1 million marijuana bust last week was destroyed by fire on Monday night, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

When crews showed up, the house was engulfed in flames.

City workers had been at the house earlier in the day boarding up and securing the house after the recent pot raid, Battalion Chief Hugo Patino said.

Four engines and one truck company attacked the fire and brought it under control within 30 minutes of firefighters' arrival. At total of 22 fire fighters responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation. Firefighters stayed there overnight to extinguish remaining pockets of fire.

The interior of the structure was gutted with the stairway to the second floor and attic having been significantly damaged by the fire.

The Modesto Fire department was assisted by the Modesto Police Department, which provided traffic control during fire operations.

No firefighters were injured combating the blaze. Initial fire loss estimated place the fire loss at $300,000.
