The identities of two men shot to death Thursday night near Marshall Park in Modesto have not been released. The Stanislaus County Coroner's Office is trying to contact relatives of the victims. The shootings took place in the 400 block of Alturas Avenue, between Tuolumne Boulevard and Western Way. (Earlier, The Bee reported incorrectly that the shootings were in 300 block of Alturas.)

Two men were shot to death Thursday night near the rear of a west Modesto home just east of Marshall Park, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 7:15 p.m. in the 300 block of Alturas Avenue, between Tuolumne Boulevard and Western Way.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots fired in the area and a vehicle leaving the scene. No vehicle or suspect descriptions were immediately available.

Modesto police officers were still on the scene late Thursday questioning witnesses and using flashlights to look for evidence in an alley behind Alturas.

Thursday's violent attack was the second shooting this week in Modesto that resulted in multiple victims.

On Tuesday, a 16-year-old boy and a 29-year-old man were hit by gunfire during an apparent gang fight on Lombardo Avenue in south Modesto. The boy, Modesto resident Eliazar Hernandez, died from his injuries. The injured man was treated and released from a hospital.

Detectives arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the Lombardo Avenue shooting. Sheriff's officials did not release the suspect's name because he is a minor.

The two shootings this week are just the latest incidents of gun violence in and around Modesto since July, including the death of a 10-year-old boy and a 29-year-old man in the 100 block of Santa Barbara Avenue as well as double-homicide of two young men outside a home near Coffee Road and Floyd Avenue.
