Their latest victory was characterized as a steal, but oh, what the Modesto Junior College women's soccer team had to endure for the goods.

The Pirates defeated powerhouse Santa Rosa JC 2-1 in stormy weather Tuesday to take a share of the Big 8 Conference lead. Modesto JC coach Steve Aristotelous pointed out the Bearcubs' only losses were to Southern California teams.

Modesto (9-3, 4-1 Big 8) scored twice with the wind at their backs in the first half on goals from Ashley Davis and Breana Ewert. Santa Rosa (7-3-1, 4-1 Big 8) scored early in the second half and could not convert on a penalty kick to tie the game.

WEST HILLS 2, MJC MEN 1 -- An own goal helped by slippery conditions in the 15th minute cost the Pirate men a tie. Antonio Arroyo scored for MJC (8-2-4) in the 36th minute to avoid a West Hills (7-3-2) shutout. MJC goalie Quinn Harter had 10 saves.
