LARGE SCHOOLS

 1.  (1) Oakdale (4-0): Wingback Devin Brooks adds a speed element to go with Tim House's bulk, and that is allowing Mustangs to grind down opponents.

 2.  (2) Sierra (4-0): RB Jarrod Daniels is just one of a number of quality VOL backs, but he is probably the one most crucial to his team winning a title.

 3.  (3) Sonora (4-0): 'Cats have been impressive the first month, but they haven't faced anyone that is as talented as this week's opponent -- No. 4 Manteca.

 4.  (4) Manteca (3-1): How does 99-0 sound? That is the combined scoring for the Buffs' last two games. Eric Reis has his kids ready for a VOL title run.

 5.  (5) Pitman (3-2): Pride has been scary the last two weeks with Dominick Walker and Markus Sanders running over foes. Pitman take this week off.

 6.  (7) Los Banos (3-2): Backup QB and RB provided big plays in CCC opener. Beating Merced this week would be a precedent-setting event for LB.

 7.  (nr) Atwater (3-1): Falcons won't be sneaking up on anyone now. Probably the district's big surprise.

SMALL SCHOOLS

 1.  (1) Central Catholic (4-0): Shutout of Johansen shows the Raiders can turn it on when they want. They'll need to vs. St. Mary's in the Holy Bowl.

 2.  (2) Escalon (4-0): Linden found chinks in the defense last week, but Cougars' wing-T and Steve Silva simply dominate the second half.

 3.  (3) Modesto Chr. (3-0): Bravo, Isaiah Burse. He completes 9 of 12 for 5 TDs to beat No. 4 team. MC showed it's much more than a one-man crew.

 4.  (4) Argonaut (3-1): Couldn't hold onto halftime lead against MC, and struggled to keep pace with increased speed of the game in crucial fourth quarter.

 5.  (5) Hilmar (4-0): Could have climbed to No. 4 after beating then-No. 7 Calaveras, but since 'Jackets host Argonaut this week, we'll let them decide it.

 6.  (5) Patterson (2-2): Spread offense suits talents of QB Cody Weinzheimer and Nate Shelton; Tigers delivered plenty of hard hits in win over Downey.

 7.  (7) Calaveras (2-2): Was in it to the finish before falling 21-14 to No. 5 Hilmar, so Redskins stay here.
