Large Schools

 1.  (2) Oakdale (3-0): Wing-T has chewed up two of Northern California's Division 2 programs the last two weeks, and the Mustangs open VOL at Central Valley.

 2.  (6) Sierra (3-0): T-wolves' defense gave a strong effort, beating Patterson 17-6, and will be tested this week by EU and hot offense led by Dennis Johnson.

 3.  (7) Sonora (3-0): Upset of then-No. 1 Davis vaults 'Cats. QB Ryan Emerald tossed a TD pass to spark 16-13 win, and Dan Link dominated second half.

 4.  (nr) Manteca (2-1): Buffs blew up Enochs for 55 points, and defense provided a shutout. VOL teams are holding down top four spots in this week's poll.

 5.  (nr) Pitman (2-2): Pride have been up and down, but scoring 77 vs. Downey, rushing for 731 yards -- No. 2 on state single-game list -- earns this ranking.

 6.  (1) Davis (2-1): Losing to first tough foe on the schedule mandated a steep drop. Spartans should be favored in remaining games, so they can climb again.

 7.  (nr) Los Banos (2-2): Lost to 3-0 teams; The CCC opens Friday and Tigers host the first two games.

Small Schools

 1.  (1) Central Catholic (3-0): Turnovers made 21-13 win over Vista del Lago closer than expected; Central will try to get back on track vs. Johansen this Friday.

 2.  (2) Escalon (3-0): Second week in a row it dominated what was expected to be a tight battle. The defense hasn't allowed a point in the last six quarters.

 3.  (3) Modesto Chr. (3-0): Speed vs. size Friday as MC visits No. 4 Argonaut; Can Mustangs contain QB Isaiah Burse and Crusaders' free-wheeling offense?

 4.  (5) Argonaut (3-0): Impressive in Friday's 24-0 win over then-No. Ripon. RBs are steamrolling foes and defense has allowed just six points this season.

 5.  (6) Hilmar (3-0): 'Jackets step up a school size to beat Central Valley 35-14; Silva brothers provide the big-play threat to balance QB Quinton McCown.

 6.  (4) Patterson (1-2): Tigers bit of a bit more than they could chew in Sierra, losing 17-6; Impressive defensive effort, holding Sierra to just two TDs.

 7.  (nr) Calaveras (2-1): RB Monti Wilson is going to give MLL defenses fits before this season is over.
