SACRAMENTO Caitlin Denise scored four goals and teammates Mikayla Walker and Desiree Lundgreen had three goals apiece Wednesday afternoon as the Modesto Junior College water polo team ran its winning streak to nine games with a 20-3 rout of Sacramento City.
The Pirates, 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big 8 Conference, also were led by Christy Saldano with two goals and one apiece by Lauryn Lewis, Ann Kreeft, Lupana Morales, Brianna McSheehy, Haylie Selby, Kashi Tomicich and Sarina De La Cruz.
MJC star Erica Crain spent part of the game in the net and recorded six saves.
MJC VOLLEYBALL The Pirates won the second game but eventually dropped their Big-8 opener to Diablo Valley 25-14, 22-25, 25-13, 25-19 at MJC Gym. Ryan Ramos led her team (6-8, 0-1) with eight kills, Caitlin Benning served three aces and Kerstin Deubert worked for 14 assists.
Ashley Mansfield had three blocks and Pam Buck picked up 19 digs for Modesto, which travels to San Joaquin Delta on Friday.
CSUS TENNIS California State University, Stanislaus star Verena Preikschas, the 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Player, is seeded third at the Wilson/ITA Regional Championship beginning today at Cal Poly Pomona.
Preikschas, 20-2 overall and 10-0 in the CCAA last season, is a sophomore from Arnsberg, Germany. She and fourth-seeded teammate Vanesa Reibstein will play this afternoon after they receive first-round byes.
Also preparing for a busy day are Modesto High graduate Katie Eng, Heather Cotter, Brianna McClintock and Lexy Harrington.
