Kudos to League for candidate forums The League of Women Voters of Stanislaus County is taking its candidate forums to the people -- into the neighborhoods that the candidates seek to represent.

Tuesday night, it sponsored a forum at the King-Kennedy Center, in Modesto City Council District 2.

Tonight, starting at 6:30, it holds a forum for District 5 council candidates in the C.F. Brown School multipurpose room. Again, that is within the district.

League members offer their time to coordinate these events, and it takes several of them to run an efficient debate -- a moderator, timers, question gatherers and so forth.

These forums provide a wonderful opportunity for citizens to see the candidates in person and to hear their views, including whether they have a grasp of the issues.

During Tuesday's forum, Dave Geer and Al Nava responded succinctly to 25 questions in only an hour. It was time well spent for the audience of about 40 people.

Next Wednesday, starting at 6 p.m., the league holds a forum for Modesto council District 4, followed immediately by a session for the Modesto City Schools board, both in the basement of Tenth Street Place. Oct. 5 it will host a forum for Riverbank mayoral candidates, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Riverbank Community Center. We commend the League for this public service.
