What office do you seek?

Modesto City Schools Board of Education

What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

I am passionate about encouraging all students to succeed and am working to keep kids in school so they can be successful. This also has a direct impact on the quality of life in Modesto. I've initiated a Drop-out Summit to find out why students drop out and what would keep them interested and engaged in school. I also desire to provide greater opportunities for our students to excel by raising expectations. I love Modesto and want to see our students continue to make gains in education to become thoughtful contributing members of our community and state.

What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

To balance the budget without further layoffs (unless due to declining enrollment) and program cuts.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

I have the most experience, knowledge and history with the Modesto School Board. I have also been elected to the California School Boards Association’s Board of Directors and appointed by the State Legislature to serve on the “Joint Committee to Develop a Master Plan for Education-Kindergarten through University”. I have proven that I have the experience and leadership to take our schools into the next phase of education.

Where do you work and what is your job title? (If retired, list position before retirement)

I have dedicated myself to full time service as a school board member and other related boards and committees. Some of the boards and committee I serve on are: the Youth Action Commission of Stanislaus County Board of Directors, the California School Board Association Board of Directors, City Ministry Network Board of Directors, the Dr. Parker Steering Committee (to encourage at-risk youth to stay in school, and close the achievement -gap) the School Attendance Review Board, the Hispanic Leadership Council, the Christian Business Women's Association.

I graduated from Escalon High School in 1980 and attended the MJC Registered Nurse Program.

I was elected to Modesto City Schools Board of Education in 1997 and re-elected in 2001 and 2005.

I have won elected office three times including 1997, 2001 and 2005.
