WATERFORD — Authorities Friday night were looking for a woman who is believed to have been in a car that went off a road and fell into a wastewater pond.
Five people tried to rescue the woman, but could not find her. The woman’s name, age and city of residence was not available.
The incident occurred about 7:15 p.m. near South Western Avenue and Riverside Road in Waterford. For an unknown reason, the car went off the road and into the pond, said Battalion Chief Paul Spani of the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District.
Two Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies, a firefighter, the woman’s boyfriend and a nearby resident searched the water for the woman, Spani said.
They were decontaminated as soon as they got out of the water before they were taken by ambulances to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for further evaluation as a precautionary measure, Spani said.
By 9:15 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department was bringing in equipment to pull out the car, which was still submerged in the water.
