DENAIR -- Defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division V champ Hilmar High opened its season with a bang Friday night, beating Denair 58-17.
But the real thunder was provided by kicker Daniel Mouro.
He booted a school-record 54-yard field goal -- believed to be the second-longest field goal in section history in any division. CalHiSports.com reports that Nevada Union's Zack McSweeney booted a 58-yarder in 1994. Mouro a school record that had been held by his, Matt, whose 47-yard kick in 1977 also was at Denair.
The Diaz brothers got Hilmar rolling, with Carlos sandwiching TD runs of 41 and 9 yards around a 3-yard TD from little brother Isaac.
The brothers each added another TD in the second half, before Jonathan Silveira capped the night with a 60-yard TD burst. Denair's Codee Watts hooked up with Mitchell Hilton on a 28-yard scoring pass for the Coyotes' highlight.
RIPON CHRISTIAN 49, DELHI 0, at Ripon -- Isaac Norman only had 10 carries, but he made each of them count, rushing for 170 yards and four TDs as the Knights jumped to a 30-0 halftime lead on their way past the Hawks (0-1). Tyler Voogd, who got the scoring started with a 24-yard TD run in the first quarter, finished with seven carries for 103 yards.
Norman picked up a chunk of his yardage on a 61-yard scoring burst that made it 27-0 in the second quarter, and he also had TD runs of 5 and 15 yards in the second half. Linebacker Josiah Neely was in on 13 tackles, as was teammate Aaron Fay.
GUSTINE 12, RIVERBANK 6, at Riverbank -- The Redskins played a little extrea on opening night, scoring in overtime on Roman Puppo's 2-yard scoring run. The Bruins, who tied the game at 6 in the third quarter on Shane Gaynor's 4-yard TD run, got the ball first in overtime at the 10-yard line. The Bruins fumbled on the first play, and Gustine punched it in on fourth-and-goal from the 2.
PATTERSON 42, McCLATCHY 0, at Patterson -- Cody Weinzheimer, making his first varsity start, completed 10 of 13 for 177 yards and two TDs as the Tigers routed the Lions. Weinzheimer, replacing a three-year starter, also had 12 carries for 71 yards.
One of his favorite targets was Wyatt Young, who caught six balls for 121 yards and a TD, while tight end Jacob Priester had a 17-yard scoring catch to make it 19-0 before halftimre. Ryan Allen had just one carry for the Tigers, but it produced a 32-yard TD to cap the scoring.
