Gov. Schwarzenegger today issued a statement of condolence upon the death of a Navy corpsman from Riverbank killed in a sniper ambush in Afghanistan.

"California has lost a brave sailor in Petty Officer 3rd Class James Layton," Schwarzenegger said. "His willingness to give his life in service to our country is a courageous sacrifice that will never be forgotten. Maria and I send our condolences to all of JamesÂ’ family and loved ones during this difficult time."

In honor of Layton, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

Layton, 22, was one of four U.S. servicemen killed in Kunar Province on Tuesday.
