ADELANTO -- Shortstop Maikol Gonzalez charged in on a tailor-made doubleplay ground ball in the 10th inning Saturday night, but saw the ball scoot under his glove, allowing High Desert to score the winning run for a 9-8 victory.
By losing, the Nuts have most likely given up home-field advantage for the first round of the California League playoffs, that start Wednesday.
The Nuts and Bakersfield are tied at 73-65, with two games to play. If they remain tied over the next two games, Bakersfield gets the homefield advantage by virtue of winning the season series against Modesto 15-14.
If that advantage holds up through Monday, the Nuts would open the playoffs at John Thurman Field on Wednesday then play two games in Bakersfield on Thursday and Friday (if needed).
The Nuts wasted a home run by Scott Beerer in the seventh inning.
