Coach: Manuel Bettencourt
Career record: 4-6
Record at school: 4-6
Last season: Gustine (1-4, 4-6) won three of first four, before struggling to score the final six weeks of the season.
Last league title: 2003
Last playoff berth: 2003
Top returners: RB Eric Gill (5-8, 150), QB Kory Bettencourt (5-9, 155), OL Austin Whitsitt (5-8, 225), TE Andrew Fernandez (6-1, 195), OL Nathan Xavier (5-10, 200), RB/LB Joseph Gerhart (5-9, 195).
Top newcomers: RB/LB Roman Puppo (Jr., 5-7, 155), OL/DL Anthony Rubio (Jr., 5-10, 220), WR Sam Ramsour (Jr., 5-8, 155).
Outlook: Gustine rode RB Felix Figueroa (876 yards, 10 TDs) as far as he could take them last year, but with his departure, the offense should be balanced. Bettencourt (30 of 63, 364 yards, 3 TDs, 3 INTs) is back at QB, with three starting linemen protecting him. With 36 players coming out for fall practice, Gustine has a wealth of numbers to play with. Gill, Gerhart and Puppo — up from the JV — the Redskins have quickness and depth in the backfield.
Worth noting: Bettencourt is the principal at Gustine Middle School, and he also coaches the Redskins’ baseball team. ... In addition to Figueroa, Bettencourt said, the Redskins lost a number of defensive starters. How the new kids react to the varsity game will go a long way to determing Gustine’s success.
Key game: Week 10 vs. Orestimba. With a playoff bid a longshot, the Redskins have their West Side battle to provide plenty of motivation.
