Last year: Beyer (4-6) lost its first four games on the field, before picking up a forfeit win over Atwater. It went 2-3 in conference, with close losses to Enochs (22-14) and Johansen (35-27), keeping the Patriots out of the playoffs. Two of its three on-field wins were against 1-9 teams.

Coaching staff: Vic Alkire (asst. head coach), Tim Schneider (defensive coordinator), Bill Chastain (OL/DL), Jim Wilkerson (special teams), Les Bonsu (WR/DB, strength), Aden Ruiz (QB/RB).
Top returners: QB McKay Marshall (5-11, 180), WR/DB Javob Bringhurst (6-0, 165, Jr.), DE/TE Zach Jenkins (6-4, 220), OL/ILB Grant Hayes (5-11, 195), S/RB Smokey Moore (5-11, 170, Jr.), WR/DB Braden Saalfeld (5-10,1 75), WR/LB Todd Van Houten (6-1, 180), Nick Arceo, LB/TE Cecil Jenkins (6-1, 195), RB/DB Aden Ruiz (5-8, 170).
Top newcomers: QB Kenny Perry (5-11, 170), WB/S Gavin Orique (5-9, 170, So.).
Outlook: The spread-look offense has been tinkered with to make it more suitable to Beyers strengths, a QB who is quick on his feet and a running game that should allow Beyer to control the clock at times. Ruiz (193 yards, 3-yard avg., TD), Moore (171 yards, 5-yard avg., 2 TDs) should find more holes this fall, as the Patriots settle into their hybrid scheme. Marshall (68 of 167, 1,086 yards, 5 TDs, 11 INTs; 598 yards rushing, 5.4-yard avg., 13 TDs) should be in sync with Bringhurst (33 catches. 19/4-yard avg., 4 TDs) and Van Houton (10 catches, 17.3-yard avg.), and he has a nice mid-range target in Cecil Jenkins (seven catches, 15.8-yard avg., TD). Cecil Jenkins had five sacks a year ago.
Key game: Beyer faces Modesto in Week 9 on the field turf at Downey High. Modesto has a physical line, a good test for Beyer late in the season, and this starts a crucial three-game run that includes Downey and Enochs to close the regular season.
