It is obvious that most Americans revered Walter Cronkite. In an age when the talking heads on TV wear their political views like proud badges on their sleeves, it is a shame we will no longer have someone like Mr. Cronkite to lend a bit of class and style to the what is now a shameless carnival of slogan shouting and posturing on TV networks.
I fondly remember that Saturday night in February 35 years ago when the lovable but dim-witted anchor from WJM in Minneapolis was able to meet his beloved idol on the "Mary Tyler Moore Show." As usual, Mr. Cronkite was gracious, friendly and lovable with the star-struck but self-absorbed Ted Baxter. He was a class act.
Good night and God bless, Mr. Cronkite.
