Hurray for the new U.S. Geological Survey groundwater data ("Study finds severe groundwater loss," Monday, Page A-1). Rational folks can only hope that our state and national leaders will use the data to find environmentally and economically sound solutions to bring aquifer pumping rates below recharge/ banking rates, even if it means fallowing thirsty west-side farms.
The catastrophic environmental and societal differences between slash-and-burn agriculture in the equatorial rain forests and drill-and-drain agriculture in the Central Valley are few and far between. It would be a travesty to see our limited water resources squandered for a short-term gain.
