Got $2?
Then you've got dinner. Or the plate to put your dinner on. Or the dishwashing liquid to clean the plate that your dinner was on. Or ... OK, you see where this is going.
The independently owned Dollar Superstore on Coffee Road at Orangeburg Avenue will celebrate its grand opening May 20. The discount retailer sells housewares and groceries with everything in its aisles priced at $1.99 or less.
Dollar Superstore, 1421 Coffee Road, Suite B, is Sacramento resident and co-owner Kim Nguyen's first foray into retail. She runs two day spas and is a partner in an auto glass business. She said she thought the time and place were right for a bargain store.
"With what's going on in the economy, it's a good time for a dollar store," said Nguyen, who is also the store manager. "The place used to be a grocery store, too. So a lot of the people in the community came to this space all the time to buy their food items."
The 15,000-square-foot store (with an additional 11,000 square feet of warehouse space) was previously a Richland Market and then Rick's Supermarket before Nguyen took over in October.
She has the shelves stocked with everything from food basics such as eggs, milk, bread and frozen entrées to household essentials such as dishware, napkins and mops, as well as party supplies including balloons, ribbons and gift bags.
The store has hired more than 10 full- and part-time employees and will have a soft opening Thursday so customers can shop early. At the grand opening, $100 gas cards will be given to the first 300 shoppers who spend $50 or more.
Nguyen said she also is opening a noodle restaurant inside the store. She hopes to have it running by the end of summer.
Dollar Superstore will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. For more information, call 524-9700 or go to www.dollarsuperstore.com.

We are living in a material world, so we might as well eat at the Material Grill. The '80s-themed restaurant opened at the end of March in Salida's Kiernan Plaza.
Named as a play on the Madonna hit "Material Girl," the restaurant and its concept were the brainchild of Salida resident Patricia Schow.
Born in 1980, Schow said her dream has long been to open a restaurant celebrating the decade of Day-Glo.
"I like the style and the music of the '80s," she said. "The '80s are (to this decade) what the '50s were to the '70s."
The restaurant is decorated with '80s memorabilia including posters and pictures. The menu descriptions and servers dress have an '80s flair.
Material Grill serves up classic American fare: hamburgers, appetizers, sandwiches and salads. The menu is still developing, and pastas will be added soon. It has a bar with eight beers on tap as well as bottled beer and wine by the glass. She is working toward acquiring a full liquor license. Schow said she is adding a patio that will be open by summer.
Material Grill, 4925 Sisk Road, Suite F, is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday.
For more information, call the restaurant at 545-8080.
