CHICO — Cal State Stanislaus senior Guat Vallejo-Howard defended his California Collegiate Athletic Association hammer title Friday with a throw of 174 feet, 2 inches.

Teammate Valentin Alberto was fifth with a 160-7 on the first day of finals at the CCAA Championships.

Luther Bell placed third to earn All-CCAA third team honors in the long jump with a leap of 22-5¼. Rashee Dean was fourth at 21-11½.

Jasmine Bailey was third in the discus (135-7) behind UC San Diego's Sarah Hendy (147-11).

MJC, at Pleasant Hill — The Pirates' Amanda Moreno slogged through the rain to finish second in the 10,000 meters at the NorCal Championships in 41:27.92. De Anza's Krista Whitmire won in 39:59.78.

Modesto teammates Sophia Villalobos was third (41:34.91) and Natalie Benoy was sixth (42:33.54) to join Moreno as state qualifiers.

MEN'S TENNIS

Modesto JC's Tom Nomof fell to Fresno's Hank Bessinger 6-2, 6-3, in the qualifying round for the state tournament at the NorCal finals in Santa Rosa. The Pirates (14-4) finished fourth in NorCal.
