Marine from Tracy killed in Afghanistan

February 19, 2009

A Marine from Tracy was killed Saturday by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, the military reported Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Hansen, 24, was on patrol when he died, family members told the Tracy Press. No other details were available.

Hansen is the 26th Marine or soldier from the Northern San Joaquin Valley -- and the seventh from Tracy -- to be killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hansen's twin brother, Matthew, also is a Marine.

Matthew Hansen told the Press that they joined the Marines a week after graduating from West High School in 2002. Daniel Hansen eventually became part of President George W. Bush's security team at Camp David, according to Matthew Hansen.

Later, Daniel Hansen went to Iraq as part of a general's staff to train security officers, his brother said, then returned to the United States for bomb training before being sent to Afghanistan in October.
