Fire destroys Modesto home

One northwest Modesto house was destroyed and second sustained significant damage from a fire Wednesday evening, officials said.

The fire appears to have started in the garage of the house that was destroyed. Both houses are next to each other on the 2500 block of McAdoo Avenue, off Sisk Road.

There were no reports of injuries, and no one was home in either residence, said Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Mark Johansen.

But initial reports said four people were trapped in one of the homes. Firefighters made an aggressive search but did not find anyone. Johansen estimated the damage to both homes at $150,000 to $200,000.

The fire's cause is under investigation.
