Erik Martin had the potential to start for the Tigers a year ago as a sophomore -- he worked out with the varsity during the summer -- but eventually it was decided to have him play with the JV team.

Martin has made the experience pay off this fall, throwing for 2,101 yards, a school-record 29 TDs and six interceptions. He had 187 yards and four TDs in Friday 45-28 victory over Buhach Colony, securing LB's first playoff berth in a decade.

"He reminds me of Chris (Randle) my last year at Golden Valley," coach Dennis Stubbs said. "He can run or throw, which is tough to defend."

Martin's 4.0 GPA, Stubbs noted, has allowed him to excel in a demanding offensive structure that has the quarterback constantly making decisions.

"Erik will be the first one to tell you that without our line, backs and receivers, he wouldn't be able to have the success he is having," Stubbs said.
