Police are investigating what they called the "suspicious" death of a man whose body was found in a north Modesto apartment early this morning.

Police identified the man as 44-year-old Matthew David Wilson of Modesto. They initially provided a different age and incorrect photograph of Wilson.

He was discovered about 3:30 a.m. in the 3700 block of Bridgeford Lane, said Sgt. Brian Findlen, Modesto police spokesman.

The man was socializing with a group of other men in an apartment on Bridgeford, Findlen said. Some members of the group, including the victim, walked to another apartment where a fight took place, he said.

Police said Wilson participated in the fight, but have not determined whether he was a victim or a suspect.

After the fight, police say Wilson appeared to go to sleep. Someone who went to check on him later found he was not breathing, Findlen said.

The apartment was not the dead man's home, he said.

Findlen said officers are conducting interviews to uncover more details about the situation, including who was in the apartment and the circumstances surrounding the fight.

"Detectives are actively working and following up on leads as we speak," Findlen said. "We're investigating it as a homicide at this point. They need to determine whether a crime occurred."
