Stanislaus Board of Supervisors Watch

The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday:

  • Accepted a $1.3 million grant from the California Department of Boating and Waterways to develop a new boat launch area at Heron Point in Woodward Reservoir Regional Park. It will include a two-lane boat launch, a floating dock, parking for 40 vehicles and trailers, restrooms and fish cleaning stations. The cost of the project is $1.8 million. The state has given the county $200,000, and the remaining money will come from park use fees, said Parks and Recreation Department Director Sonya Harrigfeld. The Heron Point area is now used for undeveloped camping but will become a day-use area, Harrigfeld said. Vote: 4-0, Mayfield absent.

  • Approved a contract with the California State University, Fresno, Foundation for a regional obesity prevention program. The five-month program will cost up to $18,500, provided by the foundation. After that, Stanislaus County will enter into annual contracts with the foundation through 2010. The obesity program has been operating in Kings, Kern, Madera, Fresno, Merced and Tulare counties since 2005. Stanislaus and San Joaquin were invited to join this year. The program works with county health services agencies to improve eating and exercise habits of people within the community. Vote: 4-0, consent calendar.

  • Approved an electronic messaging retention policy that calls for purging e-mails and instant messages from county systems after a maximum of two years. Under the policy, departments would comply with state laws for retaining public records but would require the messages to be erased after two years. Vote: 4-0, consent calendar.

  • Approved plans for constructing a landfill cell at the Fink Road Landfill. The project is expected to cost $3.8 million. Bids will be advertised, with a deadline of 2 p.m. Nov. 26. Vote: 4-0, consent calendar.

  • Approved 2007 Equal Rights Commendations for Environmental Resources and Parks and Recreation Director Sonya Harrigfeld and Deputy Executive Officer Jody Hayes.
