MAMA Mia, there they go again. The Modesto Area Music Association has announced the nominees for its eight annual MAMA Awards set for Oct. 16 at the State Theatre. And the nominees are:

Are you ready to rock? No, seriously, are you ready?

If so, then get yourself down to MonsterFest on Saturday at the Merced County Fairgrounds. The third annual festival has 18 bands on three stages. Playing will be five touring tribute bands — Damage Inc. (Metallica), Izzy Osborne (Ozzy Osbourne), Cowboys from Hell (Pantera), Generation Swine (Mötley Crüe) and Noise Pollution (AC/DC) — and bands from Northern California.

The all-ages show includes food vendors and a beer court for those 21 and older. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. Music from 4 to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the gate. Call 878-0380 or visit myspace.com/monsterfestrocks. ...

Looking to expand your cultural horizons instead? Check out the the Mexican Cultural Education show Saturday at Modesto High School.

The event will include a performance by TRIBU from Mexico City, as well as mariachi bands and dancers. The event from the Association of Mexican American Educators, Ballet Folklorico Xochipilli and Modesto High School will raise funds for scholarships for Latino students. Are you feeling folky? Check out The Kingston Trio and The Brothers Four on Monday at the Gallo Center for the Arts.

And finally, check out Nashville recording artist Stephen Cochran as he performs a benefit concert Saturday in Manteca at the Sierra High School gymnasium. Proceeds from the concert will benefit The Ripple Effect Music Foundation, which funds scholarships for Manteca students to attend summer music programs. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.
