In other action, the Board of Supervisors:

  • Approved a contract for up to $135,000 for facility programming and planning for a new coroner's facility. The $5.6 million facility would be near the Public Safety Center and sheriff's office at Hackett and Crows Landing roads. The current coroner's office and morgue is on Oakdale Road near Scenic Drive in Modesto. Built in 1978, it is too small, and considered obsolete. It does not have radiology equipment or room to install it, for instance, and the coroner staff uses equipment at Doctors Medical Center. Vote: 5-0, consent calendar
  • Released the draft annual performance evaluation report for the Community Development Block Grant Program, and set a Sept. 23 public hearing to consider the report. The county and five cities formed a consortium to receive federal funds through the program. During the previous fiscal year, Stanislaus County and the cities of Ceres, Newman, Oakdale, Patterson and Waterford split $2,655,600 for various public projects and public service agencies. Vote: 5-0, consent calendar

  • Authorized the hiring of an extra-help forensic pathologist at $162 an hour. The coroner's office has one full-time forensic pathologist, and needs someone to fill in when the pathologist is ill or on vacation. Dr. Eugene Carpenter, who lives in Los Angeles, was hired. About $20 of the hourly rate is to reimburse him for travel and lodging. Vote: 5-0, Consent calendar
  • Heard reports on the county's economic development programs and public safety programs. Motions to accept the reports were approved unanimously.
