Hope for man whose bicycle was stolen
A disabled Modesto man could be getting a new bicycle soon, thanks to a nonprofit organization started recently by Modesto police. Two teenage boys pushed the 43-year-old man off his three-wheeled bicycle as he rode along McHenry Avenue over the weekend, then stole his bike, authorities said. The 43-year-old man, who is physically and developmentally disabled, spent several hours walking the three miles to his home. Page B-3

75 YEARS AGO: Sept. 18 was the date set for the opening of the fall term at Hughson Union High School. The date was later than the previous year, because the fruit season was later and the picking of fruit, scheduled to begin in the coming week, was expected to attract many people of high school age.
50 YEARS AGO: Natural gas spewed from a ruptured 4-inch high-pressure pipeline for three hours, forcing the evacuation of 40 people from a four-block residential area in southwest Modesto. The rupture, which occurred at the Tuolumne, Sutter, Paradise intersection was caused by a tractormounted saw that had been cutting a trench in the street.
