Talent uncorked
Today's the last day to catch the "Bottleography" exhibit at Mistlin Gallery, 1015 J St. Nearly 100 wine bottles decorated by Modesto-area artists have been on display all month and were sold in a silent auction June 19, with proceeds going to assist La Nueva Jerusalem, a school in Ecuador that provides education for underprivileged children. E.&J. Gallo Winery donated cases of Barefoot Red zinfandel for the project.

75 YEARS AGO: Miss Rose Carey of Gustine was in Merced to purchase uniforms for a girls baseball team that had just organized in Gustine. The new club expected to form a league with Merced, Los Banos and Atwater.
50 YEARS AGO: Tuolumne City settled back into normal pursuits after entertaining a crowd equal to any in the past at the 23rd annual Lumber Jubilee. During the jubilee, David Carter of Sonora was named the winner of the lumberjack trophy as he chalked up 12½ points in five logging contests.
