Reading time, two minutes:

Stanislaus District athletes have accomplished great things over the years, but none better than the historic 1,600-3,200 double in the State Meet by Riverbank's German Fernandez.

Let's see: He announced his goal, then achieved it by setting a national record and two state records, collapsing on the track afterward. Good enough for you?

Fernandez led from start to finish in both races. Steve Prefontaine would have stood and cheered.

Our sad initial reaction to Usain "Lightning" Bolt's world-record 9.72 in the 100 -- I hope he's not cheating.

Bolt, 6-foot-5, is a classic "what-if" athlete: What if a sprinter had size, speed and athleticism?

So much for Tyson Gay's romp toward an Olympic gold medal.

Credit the Raiders, after the JaMarcus Russell mess, for not repeating the mistake with Darren McFadden.

May a cracked hoof not lead to broken hearts today for Big Brown and his try for the Triple Crown.

About the Celtics' Paul Pierce and Lakers coach Phil Jackson: No one pounds for 10 years to reach the NBA Finals and, after he finally arrives, fakes an injury.

Basketball 101: When Kobe Bryant shoots 9 for 26, the Lakers lose.

Don't know if he'll be the Giants' next star, but draft pick Buster Posey already has a hall-of-fame name.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are paired together for the first two rounds of the U.S. Open. Let the circus begin.

Ex-NFL goal post-puncher Vai Sikahema will fight Jose Canseco. Many ballplayers would pay to take Sikahema's place.

Sikahema-vs.-Canseco needs a worthy companion event like, say, Tonya Harding on the undercard.

Still waiting for closure on ex-Modesto Junior College pitcher Erick Threets, who was designated for future assignment Monday.

One of the Nationals pitchers Friday night against the Giants was Jesus Colome, he of the 100-mph fastball in 1999 for the Modesto Athletics.

The Giants' Noah Lowry probably will miss the rest of the season, while Giants brace for more Patrick Misch (0-2, 5.93, 10 home runs allowed).

If Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield met in a rematch, we'd bill it, "The Battle of Burning Fortunes."

When the name is better than the fighter -- Kimbo Slice.

Did someone bother to remind the White Sox's Ozzie Guillen, before his latest tirade, that his team was still in first place?

A tribute to longevity and, we think, an honest physique: Ken Griffey Jr., one swing shy of 600 home runs.

Bret Harte tackle Brett Downey, targeted for UCLA, is the first Bullfrog in two decades to go Division I.

The new Stockton Rodeo this fall promises an eight-day party, a $500,000 purse and, best of all, Bob Tallman, the "Voice of Rodeo."

Pundits and track officials already have labeled Fernandez's feat as the greatest high-school distance double in history. We won't argue.

Not that we're telling Riverbank officials how to do their job, but naming a street after Fernandez -- and having him break it in with a quick run -- is well-deserved.
