Thursday's A-1 story on Spam keeping food budgets in the pink had some people reminiscing about the old days and meals of Spam and eggs, Spam sandwiches and pan-fried Spam with potatoes or some kind of veggies.

Carlen Jupe of Salida is among those who've been served the "poor man's protein."

Said he in an e-mail: "Mom made something like this for us when we were kids in Kansas; I think the recipe probably originated during the Great Depression or World War II. I think Mom occasionally put dill or chives in the Spam soup, just for variety."

If you'd like to share a Spam story and recipe, or any other food-related story, e-mail it to sghag@modbee.com or mail to Taste, The Modesto Bee, 1325 H St., Modesto 95352. Please include your name, phone and hometown.
