Modesto Mayor Jim Ridenour's 2008-09 budget proposal includes:

  • An $872,874 reduction in spending on the city's employee benefit fund. The city made a similar cut this year.

  • Canceling the Police Department's Beat Health unit, a group that focuses on neglected properties where crimes occur. The mayor says the unit's function will continue, but with fewer resources, saving the city $100,000.

  • Freezing a vacant police lieutenant position, saving $150,000

  • Cutting four police positions assigned to special units, including Street Crimes, saving $380,379

  • Leave vacant a fire training officer job, saving $158,000

  • Eliminating the city's use of a paid lobbyist in Sacramento, saving $80,000

  • Selling three properties: a parks service center at Virginia and Coldwell avenues; the site of the burned John Muir schoolhouse on East Morris Avenue; and fire station No. 2, a city landmark on Second Street. The sales would bring in about $615,000.

  • Cutting a weed spray crew, saving $144,663

The following totals include the proposed cuts plus any new monies:

  • $3.8 million to internal service funds, such as training, benefits and fleet maintenance

  • $2.6 million to the Fire Department

  • $2.1 million to the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department

  • $2 million to the Police Department

  • $851,566 to the Community and Economic Development Department

  • $667,603 to the city attorney's office

  • $393,087 to the Public Works Department

  • $319,630 to the Finance Department

  • $165,277 to the Personnel Department

  • $164,505 to the Information Technology Department

  • $102,427 to the city manager's office

  • $46,032 to the city clerk's office
