Student's playwriting becomes a 'Deathtrap'

A washed-up Broadway playwright plots to steal a talented student's script in "Deathtrap," opening tonight at Prospect Theater Project in Modesto. Written by Ira Levin ("Rosemary's Baby," "The Boys From Brazil" and "A Kiss Before Dying"), the classic 1978 comedy-thriller blends jealousy, greed and murder.

The 1982 film version starred Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve. Prospect's production stars David Barbaree and Joe Hypes, with Karen Olsen, Heike Hambley and David Phillips rounding out the cast. The show runs through May 18. Shows are 8 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and May 15 (a Thursday) and 2 p.m. Sundays at the theater, 520 Scenic Drive. Tickets are $15; 549-9341.

'Green Eggs & Ham'

You've read the book. Now see the concert version of Dr. Seuss' popular children's storybook "Green Eggs & Ham." The Modesto Symphony Orchestra will perform Rob Kapilow's musical version Sunday at 3 p.m. at Turlock Community Theatre, 1574 E. Canal St. The solos will be performed by Vera Mariner and 10-year-old Natalie Tout-Masnica, a 2007 finalist in the orchestra's Young Idol contest. At the concert, the orchestra will hold a drawing for Dr. Seuss books and will announce the winner of its "Green Eggs & Ham" concert program cover contest. The 13 finalists, chosen from one of each of Stanislaus County's library branches, are posted on www.modestosymphony.org.

Also to be performed at the concert are Rossini's Overture to "The Barber of Seville" and Bizet's "Children's Games" with a guest appearance by performers from the Juline School of Dance. Tickets are $10 for youth 17 and under and $18 for adults. Call 338-2100 or www.galloarts.org.

Ballet's '08-09 season

Central West Ballet, a resident company at Modesto's Gallo Center for the Arts, is planning five shows in its 2008-09 season. "The Nutcracker," "Romeo and Juliet," "Peter Pan" and "A Dance Evening of New Creations," a modern repertory program, all will be presented at the arts center. The company also will present "One Thousand and One Nights" at a fund-raiser at the home of Stephen and Ann Endsley. The season begins in September. For more information, call 576-0808.

The concert, which is sponsored by the Modesto Junior College pipe organ program and the American Guild of Organists, is at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 505 W. Granger Ave. McKean has won prizes in numerous musical contests, including the Haarlem Festival in Holland and the A.G.O. competition in the United States. Admission to the concert is free.
