Site places Nelson on all-state team
Modesto Christian junior Reeves Nelson was named to the CalHiSports.com all-state first team for boys basketball. That means CalHiSports.com, which has covered high school sports for 30 years, feels Nelson is one of the top 10 basketball players in the state, regardless of division. Nelson, who was also named to the all-state Division IV and all-state junior teams, averaged 26 points and 17 rebounds per game for the 29-5 Crusaders. Nelson, The Bee's 2008 Boys Basketball Player of the Year, is verbally committed to UCLA. Nelson's senior teammate D.J. Seeley was also named to the all-state Division IV team. Seeley is signed to play for Cal next year.
Former Buhach star nabs college honor
Former Buhach Colony High standout Jake Jefferies was named the Big West Baseball Player of the Week. Jefferies, a catcher who was The Bee's 2005 Baseball Player of the Year, batted .526 with five doubles and 10 RBIs for UC Davis last week. He had a hit in all four of the Aggies' games, including six RBIs in a win over conference leader UC Santa Barbara. He had two hits, a double and an RBI in an upset win over No. 10 Stanford.
USF basketball hires former NBA player
Former NBA player Rex Walters, who had a 31-33 record in two seasons at Florida Atlantic, was formally introduced as the new coach at San Francisco during a Monday news conference. Walters takes over for Jessie Evans, who was forced to take a leave of absence in the middle of last season and then was fired last month. Eddie Sutton took over the program on an interim basis for the remainder of the season as the Dons finished 10-21. Walters, who played college ball at Northwestern and Kansas, was selected 16th overall by New Jersey in the 1993 draft and played seven NBA seasons.
Carmelo arrested
NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony was arrested early Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The Denver forward was arrested on Interstate 25, police said. He was alone in the car and pulled over for weaving and not dimming his lights. Detective Sharon Hahn said Anthony failed a series of sobriety tests. He was charged with DUI, later released, and is due in court May 14. He's expected at practice today. The Nuggets clinched the playoffs with the Golden State Warriors' loss Monday. NBA, Page C-3
