The Modesto City Council on Tuesday voted to:

  • Hire a Livermore company to rebuild about a mile of pavement on Sylvan Avenue between McHenry Avenue and Coffee Road. Top Grade Construction can earn as much as $1.8 million for the work, which is expected to take place between April and July. Its bid came in 37.7 percent below the city's estimate.

  • Approve an application for $3.36 million in funding from a state transportation bond. The funds can be used on a mix of projects through 2011.

  • The council was scheduled to vote on hiring several consultants to assist the city in checking building plans. The item was removed from the agenda and the council did not consider it.

In addition, the council met in closed session before the meeting to discuss:

  • Pay ranges for two positions: a city clerk and a city auditor

  • Negotiations with the Modesto City Employees Association, a 440-member union

  • Acquiring property for an expansion of Pelandale Avenue -- Adam Ashton
