TURLOCK -- Cal State Stanislaus' men's basketball team suffered its 20th loss of the season Thursday night, 88-79 to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Warriors (6-20, 5-14 California Collegiate Athletic Association) led with 9:14 remaining and trailed by two with 5:06 to play before the game slipped away.
Senior Duane Jones made two free throws to bring the Warriors within 83-79 with 55 seconds to go, but three turnovers sealed their fate.
Jones led all scorers with 20 points and had two steals to give him 59, moving him into fourth on Stanislaus' single-season list. Heath Colvin scored 19 points and Calvin Westbrook 16. Senior Rick Cardoso recorded his seventh double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Dominguez Hills went 5 for 6 from the free throw line in the final minute. The Toros (16-9, 11-8) had five players in double figures, led by Nonso Nibo with 19 points.
This is the third 20-loss season for the Warriors in 23 years, dating to 1985-86. Stanislaus hasn't lost 21 games in a season since going 5-21 in 1984-85.
Stanislaus is host to Cal State Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. tonight to finish the season.
Women's Basketball
CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS 72, CAL STATE STANISLAUS 68, at Turlock -- The Warriors (6-19, 4-15 CCAA) were eliminated from CCAA tourney consideration.
The Toros (13-13, 7-12) clinched the eighth and final spot with the help of Chico State's 70-42 win over Cal State Los Angeles.
The Warriors took a 12-0 lead, but the Toros came back to take the lead just over two minutes into the second half. Dominguez Hills extended its lead to eight before holding off the Warriors in the final minute.
Dominguez Hills guard Jessica Liang scored a game-high 30 points. She was 11 for 15 from the field, including 8 of 9 on 3-pointers. She also held Stanislaus scoring leader Shristy Kumar to three points on 1-of-8 shooting.
Stanislaus freshman Katie Busi collected her fourth double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Busi was 7 for 9 from the field, including 3 for 3 from behind the arc. She also had five blocked shots.
Teammate Lysandra Williams scored 22 points.
Stanislaus finishes its season tonight with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Cal State Los Angeles.
Baseball
MERCED 7, SEQUOIAS 4, at Merced -- The Blue Devils erased a 1-0 deficit and went ahead for good in the Central Valley Conference game with a four-run fourth, highlighted by Ben Gorang's two-run single.
Brock Floro went the distance for Merced, striking out seven. He allowed eight hits, walked two and hit two batters.
Softball
MERCED 6-7, MODESTO 1-5, at Merced -- Mallory Bair helped the Blue Devils to a win in the nightcap with a double, triple and five RBIs. Merced broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fourth.
Megan McColloch threw a two-hitter as Merced won the opener.
