their first appearance
in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I final, losing to Davis of Yolo 3-1. Downey went 12-6-1.
JORGE CARMONA
Atwater junior
The runner-up for The Bee's Player of the Year, the junior midfielder led the Falcons with 20 goals and 22 assists. He had two hat tricks, and had two assists in a 2-0 win over Buhach Colony that clinched the CCC title.
NICK CASH
Downey junior
One of the MMC's top offensive players, he had an assist in a first-round upset of Atwater and a goal and an assist in a 2-1 upset of West in the quarterfinals. Downey beat three league champs in the playoffs.
LUIS CISNEROS
Oakdale senior
The VOL's top defender, Cisneros was projected to play midfield until the Mustangs realized the impact he could have as a center defender. He still managed to provide 10 goals and four assists.
JOSE CORTEZ
Patterson senior
Defense was the foundation the Tigers used to win the WAC title and earn a trip to the Division V section final, and this sweeper was always at the center of the action. The Tigers (23-5) allowed only 22 goals.
ANTHONY GUTIERREZ
Buhach Colony senior
He established himself early as the CCC's top defensive player and led the Thunder to the Division I section quarterfinals. Behind Gutierrez, the Thunder (16-3-4) allowed only 16 goals -- or 0.7 per match.
JESSE HORTA
Atwater senior
The aggressive, 6-foot-1-inch attacker had 17 goals and seven assists while helping Atwater to its second consecutive CCC crown. He had a hat trick, and three times he scored two goals in a match for the Falcons.
ALONSO LARA
Livingston junior
The district's top goalie, Lara intimidated foes by attacking the ball. He posted shutouts in all three playoff matches, including a 1-0 win over Patterson that gave Livingston its first Division V section title.
JOSE LOPEZ
Escalon senior
The TVL's premier sweeper, this 6-footer was the heart of a defense that had 16 shutouts in 27 matches and powered the upstart Cougars to the league title. The league's co-MVP also provided eight assists.
KYLE LYBOLT
Davis senior
Speed and aggressiveness made Lybolt the MMC's best sweeper and its MVP despite playing on a team that didn't reach the playoffs. Davis had seven shutouts in MMC action.
VICTOR SERRANO
Modesto senior
After playing forward as a junior, Serrano moved to center midfielder and assumed the more demanding role of running the offense. He scored eight goals to lead the surprising Panthers to the MMC championship.
VICENTE VIGIL
Riverbank senior
The TVL's co-MVP, Vigil was equally effective whether attacking an opponent's net or defending the Bruins' goal. He had seven goals and two assists, and the Bruins (14-6-1) allowed a goal per match.
