URBAN RAIL JAM: Modesto's Urban Rail Jam is set to launch skiing and snowboarding competition in the city Saturday, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., at the Modesto Centre Plaza, 1000 L St. The event is a freestyle ski and snowboard competition put on by Dodge Ridge and Taco Bell. Dodge Ridge will bring a feature from one of its terrain parks and build a ramp to launch riders into a snow field in the parking lot underneath the lights. The competition will be a judged event. It runs in conjunction with the city's "Celebration of Lights" that features a Winter Carnival from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. A parade starts at 5 p.m. and ends at the site of the Rail Jam.

VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD: Soroptimist International of Modesto invites nominations for its Violet Richardson Award. Applicants must be 14 to 17 and engaged in volunteer activities in our community. Two awards of $500 will be given. Criteria for the applicants include that they demonstrate compassion, creativity and commitment to making the world a better place, initiative in identifying a problem and solving it, and have had significant and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer. Deadline for applications is Saturday, and can be obtained by calling Deanna at 522-1079.

YOUNG FARMERS AUCTION: Modesto Junior College Young Farmers will auction more than 100 items during its annual Holiday Auction on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Ag Shop, on Coldwell Avenue at MJC's East Campus. Tickets are not necessary. The event, which includes silent and oral auctions, features toys, livestock feed, Christmas trees and decorations, home and garden items, entertainment packages, gift baskets and more. The preview will begin at 5 p.m. with mini sub sandwiches, snacks and hot drinks, and the live auction at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit Young Farmers activities. If you would like to support MJC ag students by donating an item to be auctioned, call the MJC Agriculture Department at 575-6200.
