TURLOCK -- State Sen. Jeff Denham will talk about the protection of agriculture in the Central Valley on Tuesday during an ag speaker series at California State University, Stanislaus.

Admission is free and the talk is open to the public.

The university's agricultural studies department invites speakers twice a year to address timely ag issues. Serving communities surrounded by orchards and farmers, Stanislaus State is set on beefing up its ag program.

Denham, R-Merced, is serving his second term representing Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Monterey, and San Be-nito counties.

A graduate of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Denham has an agricultural background. He owns and operates Denham Plastics, a leading supplier of reusable containers in the agricultural industry. He and his family also grow almonds at their Merced County ranch.

He sits on the senate's agriculture, business, professions and economic development, education and veterans affairs standing committees.

With $2 billion in ag revenue in 2006, Stanislaus County is one of a handful of counties in the nation, most of them in California, that can claim that much gross income from farming in a year.

Top products for the county include milk, almonds, beef, chickens and walnuts, according to the 2006 Stanislaus County crop report.

Denham's talk begins at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Event Center in the middle of campus, One University Circle, off Monte Vista Avenue.
