If you're a high school football fanatic, or merely a fan, here are six games that should provide plenty of bang for your buck:
PATTERSON AT ESCALON -- Ronyea Ellington had three TD receptions as Patterson (1-0) routed McClatchy 63-7. Does Escalon (1-0) have anyone to stay with the lanky receiver? The Cougars are rebuilding and coach Mark Loureiro knows he's a big underdog here. QB Daniel Reza is a third-year starter hoping to take Patterson to a section title; Escalon QB Spencer Franceschetti gets his second varsity start. The Tigers won both meetings last year, including 12-6 in semifinal.
TURLOCK vs. DAVIS (at Modesto JC) -- Turlock RB Tharon Gallegos ran for 223 yards in the opener and the defense gave up just a TD. Turlock (1-0) is more physical than Davis, but the Spartans (1-0) have players who can go the distance. Davis will need to improve its passing attack.
MODESTO AT SONORA -- The Panthers' RBs, James Ingram and Arquel Rogers, should excel on artificial turf. Modesto (0-1) made a mountain of mistakes in their opener, and Sonora (1-0) rallied for 27 fourth-quarter points.
BRET HARTE vs. CENTRAL VALLEY (At Ceres High) -- The high-flying Hawks (1-0) have their passing attack going, with QB Trevor Mew (3 TDs in opener) and three talented receivers. Bret Harte's Robert Sailele ranks among the district's most versatile RBs.
LOS BANOS at DOS PALOS -- LB's (1-1) Erik Martin (7 TD passes) and WR Rubal Sangha (8 TDs) hope to end Dos Palos' domination of the West Side War. DP's (1-1) Ryan Yriarte and Hector Gomez had school records of 295 yards passing and 231 receiving, respectively, last week.
HILMAR at HUGHSON -- Both envision competing for the playoffs and a league title, and a win here bolsters their case. Hilmar (1-0) lost its QB to injury before the first game, so it's turned to a running game. Hughson (1-0) QB Zack Adams threw two TDs last week, but will need to do better than 5 of 9 for 70 yards tonight.
