Albores was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer about 65 mph in the far left lane. The sport utility vehicle veered to the right and overturned, coming to rest on its side in the highway’s shoulder, the California Highway Patrol reported.

No passengers were in the SUV, and Albores was wearing a seat belt. No other vehicles were involved.

A woman died Tuesday afternoon when she lost control of a sport utility vehicle and crashed on Highway 99 near Briggsmore Avenue in Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Southbound traffic was backed up for several miles for a few hours as authorities worked to clear the crash site.

The woman was pinned inside the Chevrolet SUV, and firefighters had to pull her out, said officer Eric Parsons. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP officials did not release her name because her family had not been notified. Her age and city of residence were not available Tuesday night.

No passengers were in the SUV, and the woman was wearing a seat belt. Parsons said it appeared no other vehicles were involved.

The crash occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes, just south of the Briggsmore Avenue overpass.

Parsons said the woman lost control of the SUV for an unknown reason. The SUV swerved before it overturned and came to rest on its side in the far right lane, partially blocking the center lane.

CHP officers kept one lane open while others collected evidence and worked to clear the scene. The center lane was opened shortly after 5 p.m., and the far right lane was opened about 5:30 p.m.

Southbound traffic was backed up as far as Ripon. Northbound traffic was backed up as well because drivers slowed to look at the crash scene.
