WINTON — A 28-year-old man is in critical condition after being beaten early Sunday at a bar, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.
Witnesses flagged down a deputy around midnight, telling him of a fight at the Outpost Bar, in the 6500 block of Winton Way.
The deputy found the victim on the ground, as several people took off running, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman. The victim's name was not released.
Investigators believe as many three people approached the man in the bar, asking him if he belonged to a gang. When he denied belonging to a gang, one of them punched him, knocking him out, MacKenzie said.
Deputies arrested 22-year-old Ubaldo Rosas of Winton after a foot chase. The victim had severe head trauma. He was flown by helicopter to a Modesto hospital and is in critical condition, MacKenzie said.
