Modesto police responding to shooting near school

Modesto Police officers are responding to a reported shooting near Elliot Alternative Education Center in central Modesto.

Witnesses said the shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. near a small cul-de-sac off East Coolidge Avenue at Sunrise Avenues.

According to preliminary reports, the victim is a male. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

David Salcido, who lives in the cul-de-sac, said he was outside with friends to fix his fence when they heard an altercation.

"We heard yelling and then a shot, and then a car pulled away," Salcido said.

He and other residents said they didn’t see the shooters or the victim.

Police followed a car afterward, but investigators said it wasn’t connected to the shooting.
